Thyroid – An Overview

Thyroid & Parathyroid diseases

The Thyroid is a small butterfly shaped gland at the base of your neck. The thyroid gland manufactures hormones that regulate your body’s metabolism. Hormonal disorders can cause Hypo Thyroids (decreased hormones) or Hyper Thyroids (increased hormones). Enlargement of the Thyroid gland comes goitre. Sometimes some of these thyroid nodules can be cancerous. Behind the thyroid gland there are four small glands called the para thyroids which are involved in regulation of calcium metabolism in the body. Para Thyroid disorders lead to abnormal levels of calcium in the blood that can cause brittle bones Kidney Stones, fatigue, weakness and other problems.

Vast majority of thyroid disorders can be managed by lifestyle modifications and medications. Not all Thyroid nodules require surgery. Thyroid nodules have to be carefully assessed to look for: a) Possibility of cancer b) Compression of wind pipe or food pipe An endocrine surgeon is specially trained to perform highly complex thyroid and para thyroid surgeries with least complications like voice loss and Hypocalcaemia (decreased calcium levels in blood).
